Widow Wisdom For The Day

Writer's picture: A. MacDonaldA. MacDonald

There should be a book about the things no one tells you that you need to do in the event of your spouse's passing. In the last two days, I learned a lesson and I've been trying to deal with it but because of Covid-19, it's a struggle.

I did not know that I needed to report Randy's death to Butler County. Randy died in Clermont County. Randy was paying spousal support to his ex-wife and because they were unaware of his passing, he has a balance that they see due to her. As a result, they want to keep the $300 that I was going to try to use to balance what I owe to federal taxes. This morning, I reported his death and have to send a death certificate but the Ohio IRS offices are closed. I don't know how to deal with that portion when they are closed.

So this is my words of wisdom to those of you out here... if your late spouse was paying child support or spousal support, report the death to the county that the order was done in immediately.
